Bio and Artist Statement:
I grew up in the small California Sierra village of Blue Canyon. My mother was an artist and my brother was too. I studied, Art, Math, and Science while at UC Davis. For as long as I can remember I have been a student of painting/art making; taking private lessons as well as formal art classes at several universities, and studio classes at San Francisco Art Institute.
I usually paint with oils and cold wax, but I make digital paintings too. My artwork is a reflection of everything that is me: the cultural, family, spiritual experiences, travels, and adventures that influenced me as I grew up and matured. My daily meditation practice has had profound influences on the way I paint, the colors I love working with, and my painting style in general, even as it evolves. I am so fortunate! My life has been rich with love, family, travel, adventure, working with children from the heart, and making art. Every painting I make feels like a new adventure that I am just tickled to be here, alive and making. Every painting I make is my passion, and sometimes the vehicle for finding that new painting and passion comes thru the quiet of my meditation.
My paintings have evolved from using oil alone and making brush strokes to using oil and always mixing cold wax into it, and using only a palette knife. I begin all of my paintings the same way, with a blank white panel and I just choose a color, which is usually a blue hue of sorts and put it upon the blank panel, then the whole painting just evolves from that initial contact with the panel. I rarely have any idea of what will evolve, but I do think that initial palette knife stroke filled with 'blue' pigment influences the direction the painting heads and the blue slowly morphs into sky or water, giving me sweet expressionistic landscapes. I love painting and I especially love working with oil and cold wax. It's a lovely sensuous mixture and it sends me back to my childhood years of running my stubby chubby fingers around the empty bowl used for cake batter making after my mother just poured the mixture into a cake pan for baking.
I was once a school psychologist working mostly in Sonoma County California, although I did work for 6 years overseas with DoD schools, did a one year stint at Quantico and another in the Middle East, and I worked in Indian Education programs here in California. I am a proud graduate of the Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEPP) at Humboldt State University, in Arcata, CA. I am so fortunate to have had so many adventures and experiences and to have had the opportunity to paint in so many different countries!
